講演内容のまとめ
　原子力開発は1930年代に始まり、当初は軍事利用が中心でしたが、太平洋戦争後は軍事利用を避け、産業や生活の向上に役立てる方向へ進みました。例えば、水問題の解決や害虫の駆除などへの利用が考えられました。また、1957年にはIAEAが設立され、国際的な安全管理も進められました。

　原子力は環境に良い面がある一方で危険もあるため、ウランなどの核物質は厳重に管理されています。安全確保のための調査は定期的に行われ、情報収集、国レベルでの取り組み、計画の実行、結論の話し合いという四つの手順で進みます。実際には、核物質の量を数えたり中身を調べたりし、不足があれば証拠を探し、結果をレポートにまとめます。

　さらに、ピケット氏は「主張する権利を持ち、自分の志を大切にすべきだ」と述べており、その言葉が心に残りました。（M.K.）

After listening to this lecture, I changed the way I think about clean energy. I used to believe that clean energy had mostly advantages, but I learned that it also has many disadvantages and that safety is ensured through strict management by the IAEA. I also learned about the various energy-related activities carried out by the IAEA. This lecture made me more interested in the IAEA than before. (M.I.)

I learned a lot and made new discoveries through Ms. Susan Elena Pickett’s lecture on the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency).
In the lecture, we learned about the IAEA’s influence worldwide and its specific activities in Japan, and we also heard about Ms. Pickett’s own experience.
It was a precious time for me to learn about the IAEA, and I hadn’t thought about how nuclear power affects the environment or how much attention is paid to power generation methods recently.
However, they became clear through the lecture. Also, listening to Ms. Pickett’s opinion gave us a chance to think about how we can take action on international issues.
In addition, I was surprised by the other high school students asking questions smoothly in English during the lecture.
I felt that I would like to overcome the barrier of “I can understand the meaning, but I don’t dare to ask questions”. I will use and ask questions in English many times from now on.(R.N.)
